“Superbly organised, superbly entertaining, educational and just oozing with many positive benefits for our students, staff, school and community. Highly recommended!”
Principal Minyerri Primary school via Katherine NT

Kidz Fun Biz (KFB) is comprised of Darwin’s foremost professional children’s entertainers who have worked together since 1997. This dynamic group offers entertainment of exceptional calibre for any function involving children. Their many different and diverse shows captivate children with total interaction, singing, dancing, magic, games, competitions, circus tricks all interwoven into a story line designed to teach numbers, colours, and safety in a non-threatening and fun way.

The professionalism and quality of their “Edutainment” is provided by the two main performers of Kidz Fun biz Chantal “The Fairy” and Miss Deb recognised by Chantal’s nomination in the NT Australian Citizen of the year 2000 awards and Debbie’s win in the 2001 NT Young Australian of the year awards Arts Category.

Kids Fun Biz Sowing the Seeds Program is an initiative born from the experiences of Debbie Hyder and Chantal Munro and with the support and input of many health and community officers, principals, teachers and teachers aids, community elders, and the young people themselves from a cross-section of the community at whom the project will be targeted. Debbie and Chantal are long term Territorians who are innovative in their industry of children’s entertainment. They have instigated and practiced the concept of education through entertainment within the Territory with outstanding results. Chantal and Debbie are well respected and much sought after in the entertainment industry. Their commitment to the Territory in which they live will see them implement their Sowing Seeds initiative into Territory communities for the greater benefit of individuals, communities and the Territory as a whole. Their interaction with students, workers and community leaders has become a source of vision and motivation. Their desire to be a positive part of these communities has been the inspiration for the development of a holistic program designed to bring health, confidence, and self-actualisation to participants.

Kids Fun Biz will help resolve social and health problems by introducing and implementing the Sowing the Seeds Program to major remote Aboriginal communities within the NT.  This program is a newly developed initiative that involves introducing predominantly primary aged school children in remote communities to fun, challenging and rewarding circus activities that: are beneficial for self development and self confidence; encourage a healthy lifestyle; promote cooperation and leadership; and develop inter and intra-cultural respect and friendships.

Prior to the implementation of the program, Territory Health Services, Community Nurses, Councils, Police and Schools will be consulted within each community to tailor the program to meet the specific requirements of individual communities.

By delivering the program through schools to target youth of primary school age, this preventative program aims to promote resistance to peer pressure and reduce the risk of youth becoming involved with substance abuse and other unhealthy and socially unacceptable activities as well as demonstrating the benefits of a healthier way of life before unhealthy lifestyle patterns emerge.

The Sowing the Seeds Program is an analogy for this aptly named program, which introduces skills, and ideas that can develop and grow with the continued support of each school and community for the long-term benefit of the community as a whole. Sowing the Seeds also refers directly to the planting of fruit tree seeds within the communities to establish a supplementary diet and encourage healthy eating.

Substance abuse, bullying, stealing and vandalism are social problems that require urgent attention in many of the Northern Territory’s remote communities. Boredom amongst youth due to lack of activities and limited resources is one commonly identified root of these problems. Health of indigenous Australians in communities also needs to be addressed and numerous reports have publicly identified and quantified these social and health problems. Circus programs implement solutions to rectify these well-documented problems by encouraging the benefits of healthier eating and a healthier lifestyle, delivering basic health information in a fun, practical, and memorable manner. A fundamental aspect of this health education will be the initiation of an ongoing community health fruit tree planting and care project.

Our goal of education through entertainment has proven very successful at the schools we have already visited, we continue to develop fun and exciting programs that challenge the spirit and encourage self confidence, development and self discipline.

School and Community Programs
“The final concert was a wonderful balance of skilled performance and student participation. Our students are normally very shy about public performance so staff were quite surprised at how eagerly the students participated. I know that the staff and students of our school benefited greatly from the energy and skills Kidz Fun Biz brought to our community and we look forward to having them back next year”
Deputy Principal, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School, Wadeye (Port Keats)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Stage 1: Prop Development, First Steps (of skills development) & Sowing of Seeds
Two weeks prior to their visit to each community, Kidz Fun Biz will send procedural text, raw materials and instructional videos to the school to initiate the Sowing the Seeds Program. Students will gather recycled materials from their community and any bush resources required to make the circus props. Students will make costumes and props with teacher support and supervision. Utilising the ‘First Steps’ information sheets and videos, students will learn and practice basic circus skills techniques. Students will research fruit and vegetable growing and sow the seeds provided and establish a timetable for care and maintenance of the schools fruit/vegetables garden.

Stage 2: Circus Workshops & Tree Planting (1-2 day program)
Kidz Fun Biz will visit each community to teach the students and teachers how to use the props they have made and how to use other specialised circus equipment. Routines will be choreographed and the culminating community performance coordinated by Kidz Fun Biz will emphasis the importance of cooperation, respect, goal setting, reward for effort and healthy eating and lifestyle habits. Kidz Fun Biz will present fruit trees to the school students for their fruit/vegetable care project. Preliminary discussions with the Agricultural department at Taminmin High School (Humpty Doo) suggest they are keen to support the Sowing the Seeds program by providing ongoing advice and information to communities to help them maintain a healthy and productive fruit/vegetable garden.

Activities are designed to: improve hand/eye co-ordination; enhance dexterity and balance; develop motor skills; promote student co-operation; improve self-esteem, self-confidence and community awareness. The natural dexterity and hand/eye coordination of many children and the ease at which they are able to accomplish juggling and tight wire and other activities leads very quickly to increased self-confidence. Older students are taught the most difficult skills throughout the program and are hence given responsibilities to assist and teach the younger students after completion of stage 2. This has a phenomenal effect on self-confidence and pride of these young people within the community. It gives them responsibility that they are keen to have and at the same time they achieve an understanding of the difficulties that teachers face in certain circumstances. This is an invaluable learning process that will then assist teachers to develop better relations with the older students. This sowing the seeds program requires a combined teacher and student effort and has proven beneficial to improving staff interrelations as well as teacher and student relations.

Stage 3: Continued skill development & crop harvesting during and after school: teachers and community members will encourage students to continue practicing and developing their skills. Older students will be given the responsibility of sharing their skills with other youth in the community.

Further community displays in the form of a school concerts or fundraisers will encourage continued interest from youth.Regular care and maintenance of the established fruit/vegetable garden will be continued by the students with guidance and support from teachers and other community members

PASSION STATEMENT
Kidz Fun Biz have a dream, to share our skills and ideas with as many communities as possible, to leave behind the knowledge and the enthusiasm to inspire people within the community to take charge of their own self development in new, fun and innovative ways. We need to act now, in a positive and constructive manner, with the support of a government striving for the same broader goal of social justice. We believe the flexibility, continual effort and sheer amount of enthusiasm we project into all of our programs will be a key to the workability and success of the Sowing the Seeds Program.

Low rates of literacy and language barriers so apparent in communities often present problems, but not to Kidz Fun Biz. With our activity based, education through entertainment programs, success is guaranteed. Short-term success of the Sowing the Seeds program will be overwhelmingly obvious in each and every community we visit. The longer-term benefits are endless when individuals take control of their ideas and strive to achieve their own self-set goals. Elders in many communities have already seen the positive effects we have on youth and are always sad to see Kidz Fun Biz leave the community.
